MANATIS: Reimagining Time Through Body, Nature, and Sensation

What happens when time is no longer ruled by the clock?

In this residency, the collective MANATIS investigates forms of time shaped by bodies, sensations, and the rhythms of the natural world. The project begins from the idea that performance can dissolve the boundary between spectator and participant, creating a shared environment where scenic and social space merge.

Drawing from crip theory, queer perspectives, and ecological observation, the collective questions the dominant linear model of time based on productivity, efficiency, and control. Instead, they explore temporalities that emerge through fatigue, rest, repetition, interruption, instinct, and sensory awareness. The time of a bird, a mountain, a river, or a chronically ill body each follows its own logic — and each offers another way of understanding presence and relation.

The residency process combines choreographic research, movement practices inspired by animals, rhythmic experimentation, collective dramaturgy, and accessible working methods that adapt to the needs and energies of the group. Rest and pacing are treated not as limitations, but as creative forces.

Together, Marc Philipp Gabriel, Tis Aly, and Anajara Amarante bring long-standing shared practices in performance, ecology, disability, queerness, scenography, rhythm, and embodied research. Their previous collaborations form the basis for this new phase of inquiry.

The result will be an evolving performative space where audiences are invited to move, rest, observe, and experience time differently.
