Catherine Sikora’s saxophone playing is characterized by melodic agility and a rich palette of timbres. Her phrasing reveals the multitude of musical and cultural influences with which this Irish jazz musician shapes her sonic narratives. Confident and expressive, the American blues and jazz singer Eric Mingus has long since stepped out of his father’s long shadow. The youngest son of Charles Mingus possesses a powerful musical presence and depth. As a duo, Sikora and Mingus craft improvised dialogues ranging from intimacy to ecstasy.
Pianist Isabel Anders’ somnambulistic improvisations are like voyages of discovery. They move forward tentatively, as if an abyss were yawning beside every step. Lazara Rosell Albear creates dense textures of white noise and shimmering trills on her mini-trumpet. On the drums, she impresses with an incisive style characterized by sparse accents and densely interwoven cymbal work. Anders and Albear have already tested the dynamic magnetism of their interplay in various configurations. The communication between them is immediate and direct.
